Understanding What Happens Post-Surgery
After bariatric surgery, hair shedding (called telogen effluvium) is common, typically between 3–9 months post-op.
This happens because:
Protein intake is low (the body prioritizes organs, not hair).
Vitamin/mineral absorption changes.
Rapid weight loss shocks the growth cycle.
But don’t worry — with the right internal + external care, your curls can bounce back beautifully.
🥩
1. Nutrition & Supplements for Hair Growth
Healthy hair starts inside. Focus on bariatric-approved nutrition that supports follicle strength:
Protein:
Goal: 60–80g daily (ask your surgeon/dietitian for your target).
Use high-protein shakes and soft foods like eggs, tuna, or Greek yogurt.
Collagen peptides (unflavored) can help support hair growth and skin elasticity.
Key vitamins/minerals:
Biotin: Promotes keratin production.
Iron: Prevents excessive shedding (low iron = weak hair).
Zinc: Supports scalp and follicle repair.
Vitamin D & B12: Essential for new hair growth.
Omega-3s: Keep curls hydrated from within.
💊 Tip: Stick to your bariatric multivitamin routine religiously — this alone can reduce hair loss significantly. I add in pumpkin seed oil vitamins for growth and to help with strength and breakage too.

2. Wash & Moisture Routine for Fragile 3C Hair
Your curls may become drier and more brittle post-surgery due to nutrient loss, so moisture is key.
Wash every 7–10 days with:
Gentle, sulfate-free shampoo: Donna’s curls , or TGIN Moisture Rich or your choice is key 🔑
Follow with a moisturizing conditioner: Camille Rose Moroccan Pear, or SheaMoisture Manuka Honey. Again your choice
Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb while the conditioner is in.
Deep condition weekly:
Use products rich in protein + moisture balance.
Apply heat (hooded dryer or thermal cap) for 20–30 minutes. If you are on a NO heat journey then let it sit on your hair.
Try:
TGIN Honey Miracle Mask (moisture)
Aphogee 2-Minute Keratin Reconstructor (strength)

3. Daily & Weekly Moisture Routine
Stick to a LCO method (Liquid → Cream → Oil) to restore elasticity.
L (Liquid): Water or leave-in conditioner spray
C (Cream): Moisturizing curl cream like Donna’s curl , Aunt Jackie’s Curl La La, or Pillow curls
O (Oil): Light oil like argan, jojoba, or grapeseed
🔁 Daily: Light mist and refresh curls with water + leave-in mix.
🔁 Weekly: Seal ends with oil to prevent split ends and breakage.

4. Protect & Preserve
Sleep: Use a satin or silk bonnet or pillowcase.
Protective styles: Braids, twists, buns, or wigs (not tight!) to minimize manipulation.
Scalp care: Massage your scalp 3–4x per week with warm oil (rosemary or peppermint oil diluted in carrier oil). It stimulates blood flow and encourages regrowth.
✂️
5. Manage Shedding & Regrowth
Expect temporary shedding for up to 6 months post-surgery — it’s normal.
Trim ends every 8–10 weeks to prevent tangling and split ends.
Avoid chemical straighteners, excessive heat, or tight styles during this regrowth phase.
💆🏽♀️
6. Mind & Body Support
Stress, dehydration, and fatigue can slow regrowth.
Drink 64+ oz of water daily.
Get enough sleep (7–8 hours).
Take gentle walks or low-impact exercise to boost circulation and oxygen to the scalp.
I hope this has helped you like it has helped me. If you’ve followed my journey I struggled with hair loss post bariatric surgery from post op months 3-6 months. I NEVER did the big chop ✂️ you don’t need too. Just do the steps and let me know the outcome!
